The U.S. Arctic Research Commission will hold its 122nd meeting at Room 501 Akasofu Building, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK, on September 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A public comment session will be held from 2:00 pm until 2:30 pm. Call in information is as follows:

Advanced Microreactors Arctic Deployment Workshop
The U.S. Arctic Research Commission, in collaboration with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the Department of Energy, Arctic Energy Office and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), is hosting the Advanced Microreactors Arctic Deployment Workshop at UAF in Fairbanks, Alaska, from September 9–11, 2026.
Developed, coordinated, and facilitated by ERDC, the workshop will bring together senior federal leaders, technical experts, operators, and infrastructure practitioners to examine the research and development needed to support the deployment of advanced nuclear microreactors in Arctic environments.
The workshop will feature a tabletop exercise examining the full microreactor deployment lifecycle (from site selection and transportation to construction, operations, emergency response, and decommissioning), while identifying technical challenges, operational risks, and research priorities specific to harsh Arctic conditions.
Discussions will also explore future testing and demonstration needs, opportunities for collaboration with industry, and strategies to accelerate deployment of advanced microreactor technologies. Participants will also visit Arctic infrastructure sites, including the ERDC Permafrost Research Tunnel, a potential reactor deployment location at Fort Wainwright, and Project JANUS technology exhibits.
