[Opinion] Claim That Jet Stream Crossing Equator is 'Climate Emergency' is Utter Nonsense. Two bloggers have made a stunning claim that has spread like wildfire on the Internet: They say the Northern Hemisphere jet stream, the high-altitude river of winds that separates cold air from warm air, has done something new and outrageous. They say it has crossed the equator, joining the jet stream in the Southern Hemisphere. One said this signifies that the jet stream is ' wrecked', the other said it means we have a " global climate emergency." The Washington Post
Ice, Ice Data: Ahead of the Curve. Sea-ice levels in May reached their lowest monthly levels on record, continuing on a pace to set a new summer low, reports the National Snow and Ice Data Center, a Colorado-based research outfit. The NSIDC underscores that its May sea ice extent numbers rely on tentative data due to a satellite malfunction in April, but it says the information is supported by other measurements. The Curious Case of the Cold Blob. There's a odd, cold "blob" in waters southeast of Greenland, and it's there despite record global temperatures.
Researchers used the blob last year as possible proof that the area's massive oceanic circulatory system, known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is slowing down because of global warming. The slowing, scientists postured, could be partially from fast-melting ice in areas like Greenland, essentially clogging parts of the system. E&E News
